Internationally acclaimed for the commitment, flair and insight of their performances, violinist Rupert Marshall-Luck and pianist Matthew Rickard present a programme of music from the First World War including the UK Premiere of the Violin Sonata in G major (Gallipoli) of Frederick Septimus Kelly.

Kelly was born in 1881 in Australia and first came to the United Kingdom when he began his schooling at Eton College. Although a notable rower – he won a Gold Medal for Britain in the 1908 London Olympic Games – he was also a highly gifted composer, mostly active in the genres of song, solo piano music and chamber music. His Sonata in G minor was written for Jelly d’Aranyi, a violinist of Hungarian descent who also inspired such composers as Elgar and Vaughan Williams, and was composed in 1915 in Kelly’s tent at Gallipoli, hence the work’s appellation. It is complemented in this concert by Ivor Gurney’s passionately intense Sonata in E-flat major, Bristol-based composer John Pickard’s powerful and evocative Insomnia, and Vaughan Williams’s beautifully poetic The Lark Ascending, its performance marking the centenary of its composition.
